Tablebase

An endgame tablebase is a database of solved positions for specified material sets, providing exact results within its covered rules and metric.

Tablebase: a practical example

A supported low-material position may be known as a win, draw, or loss with perfect play. Some tablebase metrics count distance to a conversion or zeroing move rather than distance to mate. Move-count rules and the halfmove clock can matter.

How to use the idea in your games

Check coverage, metric, and rule handling before calling a result exact. A tablebase does not solve positions containing more pieces than its supported set, and an engine score is not automatically a tablebase result.

A useful study question

Can you explain tablebase in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
