A rating is not a ranking
A rating estimates performance within a defined player pool. A ranking orders players under a list’s selection rules. Two players can share a displayed rating, and a player’s ranking can change because other players’ ratings change. Attach the system, category, and publication date to every comparison.

Separate the pools and the categories
Classical, rapid, and blitz ratings belong to separate time-control pools. Women’s and junior lists also apply category criteria. Do not assume that the person first on one list must occupy the same position on another.
Online platforms have their own player populations and rating procedures. A Chess.com rating, a Lichess rating, and a FIDE rating are not interchangeable currencies. A universal conversion number would conceal important differences and uncertainty.
Understand expected score and rating change
The familiar Elo expectation compares two ratings and estimates a score expectation, where a win counts as one point and a draw as half a point. A rating update then compares the actual score with the expected score using a development factor.

Read the snapshot methodology
We transcribe the first ten displayed entries from each linked FIDE list. Source order is retained where displayed ratings are equal. Federation codes reflect the sporting federation in the source, not a verified citizenship or current residence.
The ranking methodology records the date and scope. Follow the original list to check more players or a subsequent publication. Profiles here summarize only the categories where a player appears in these excerpts.
