Stockfish

Stockfish is an open-source chess engine that combines sophisticated search with position evaluation and communicates with compatible interfaces through UCI.

Stockfish chess term — branded learning card

Stockfish: a practical example

A chess website or desktop application can provide the board while Stockfish supplies candidate moves and analysis. Stockfish is not itself a conversational tutor: a separate explanation layer must accurately interpret the position and the engine's variations.

How to use the idea in your games

Record the engine version and search settings when comparing analyses. Verify important lines on the board, and distinguish Stockfish output from a language model's unverified description.

A useful study question

Can you explain stockfish in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
