An endgame is a phase with reduced material in which king activity, pawn promotion, and precise technical play often become especially important.

Endgame: a practical example

Exchanging queens may lead toward an endgame, but a queenless position with many active pieces can still have middlegame features. The useful question is how the remaining material changes the role of the kings and the value of passed pawns.
