Rank: a practical example
White's pieces begin on the first rank and White's pawns on the second. A White rook reaching the seventh rank may attack several Black pawns sideways. For Black, the equivalent invasion is often the second rank, not the seventh.
How to use the idea in your games
Read coordinates from White's perspective even when a digital board is flipped. A rank is a board coordinate, whereas a player's ranking is a position in a competitive list.
