Middlegame

The middlegame is the phase in which developed pieces and established pawn structures support attacks, maneuvering, and tactical operations.

Middlegame: a practical example

A player may need to improve a poorly placed knight, prepare a pawn break, or defend a weak king. There is no exact universal move number at which this phase begins, and some games pass quickly from opening exchanges into an endgame.

How to use the idea in your games

Create plans from the position's imbalances: king safety, material, activity, space, and pawn weaknesses. Keep checking concrete threats while pursuing a longer-term idea.

A useful study question
