Initiative

The initiative is the ability to create threats or set problems that make the opponent respond rather than pursue an independent plan.

Initiative: a practical example

A player with active pieces may repeatedly threaten a pawn break, a tactical strike, or a king attack. The initiative can change hands after a careless tempo loss or a successful defensive exchange.

How to use the idea in your games

Maintain useful pressure without making empty threats. When the opponent neutralizes your immediate ideas, improve the position rather than forcing an attack that no longer has support.

A useful study question

Can you explain initiative in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
