Material: a practical example
A common learning scale assigns a pawn one point, a knight or bishop about three, a rook five, and a queen nine. These are working estimates, not rules: king safety, piece activity, and pawn promotion can outweigh a simple total.
How to use the idea in your games
Count material after the full sequence rather than after your first capture. Then evaluate whether either side has compensation that makes the numerical comparison misleading.
A useful study question
Can you explain material in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
