Novelty: a practical example
A move absent from one database is not automatically new to chess. It may have appeared in an obscure event, in a different move order, or in unpublished analysis. Claims of novelty therefore depend on the reference material examined.
How to use the idea in your games
Describe the scope of your search when labeling a move new. More importantly, test whether the idea improves the position; originality alone does not establish quality.
A useful study question
Can you explain novelty in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
