Rating performance: a practical example
A player scoring above expectation against strong opposition may produce a performance figure above their starting rating. That figure describes the event and is not automatically the player's new published rating. Different calculators may handle perfect scores or unrated opponents differently.
How to use the idea in your games
Keep the number of games and calculation method visible. A performance over a few games is less informative about stable strength than a longer pattern of comparable results.
A useful study question
Can you explain rating performance in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
