Pawn

A pawn moves forward but captures one square diagonally forward. On its initial square, it may advance two squares if both are empty.

Pawn: a practical example

A White pawn on e2 may move to e3 or e4, but it captures on d3 or f3. After advancing, it cannot retreat. This one-way movement makes pawn decisions lasting commitments that shape space, open lines, and endgame possibilities.

How to use the idea in your games

Before pushing a pawn, identify the squares it stops defending. A useful advance should gain something concrete without creating a weakness you cannot protect.

A useful study question

Can you explain pawn in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
