King: a practical example
In a middlegame with queens on the board, the king often needs pawn cover and limited exposure. In a simplified endgame, the same king can become an active attacking piece. Its legal movement does not change; the danger around it does.
How to use the idea in your games
Before making any move, confirm that your own king remains safe. Kings also attack adjacent squares, so they may not stand next to one another.
A useful study question
Can you explain king in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
