Opening: a practical example
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6, White can choose different setups with different plans. Memorizing one continuation helps only when you understand what to do if Black changes the move order or chooses a sound alternative.
How to use the idea in your games
Study the purpose of each move and a few typical middlegames. A short, understood repertoire is usually more useful for a learner than an enormous collection of unexplained variations.
