Grandmaster: a practical example
The standard norm-based route generally involves a qualifying rating and norm performances that satisfy detailed conditions. Direct-title routes and additional requirements also exist, so crossing a headline rating threshold alone does not automatically complete the process.
How to use the idea in your games
Distinguish a title from a current rating or ranking. A titled player can have a lower current rating, and a strong untitled player is not automatically entitled to use the title.
A useful study question
Can you explain grandmaster in your own words, identify it in a position, and describe when the idea does not apply? Test the explanation on a legal board before relying on it.
